Ah Life ... How Thankful I Am!

Sorry for my personalized blogging absence!!!

I decided it was time to get back in the groove, so to jump-start my bum I'm going to share what's been happening in my life the last 2 months - the reasons (excuses) for my missing in action.

#1 Kindergarten and preschool started for my two daughters. TEARS!

#2 Got rear ended on the way to the hospital for a prenatal monitoring. Go figure.

#3 Baby #3 arrived - my big-boy son, Luke. More tears, but this time not mine.

#4 My almost 4-yr-old daughter, Emily, decided to fall off the swing set ladder and break both bones in her right forearm only TEN days after Luke was born. NOT pretty.

#5 Three weeks later, Emily's left hand didn't get off the front door jam fast enough. REALLY not pretty. Reattaching the tip of her finger required a bit of surgery.

I'll premise the next two with this:
We live in a construction zone, fixer-upper.

#6 Drywall was finally hung on the entire first floor. Talk about a dusty mess!! Fine, powdery film all over every inch of the house - 2nd floor included. More tears for mommy, the maid.

#7 Plasterers came in the following two days to put a nice skim coat over the drywall - and splatter wet mud ALL over.  Mommy the maid knew the mess was on its way, but seriously. M.E.S.S.

Oh. Forgot to mention that NO furniture - NOTHING - could be in our living space for #6 and #7. My living room furniture and kitchen cabinets became lawn ornaments for three days. Yippee!

And finally ...

#8 My debut novel, Eye of the Soul, released during this time along with its 4 week blog tour.

Yeah. This was me every morning for the past 2 months ...

But all is better now.

I'm just thankful to be here ... and alive.

What are you thankful for this Thanksgiving Day?

#WriterlyWisdomWednesday: Romance Author, Barbara Bettis, on Critique Groups

I'm pleased to have fellow TWRP romance author, Barbara Bettis here today sharing on a topic I high recommend ... critique groups.

Be sure to check out her newest release!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 Let’s Hear It for Critique Groups
I’m in the midst of edits on my second medieval and each week, I take a section back to my critique group. The members have seen it at every step of the writing process and yet, on this last go-through, they’re finding things that had slipped past all those other times.
We’re doing the same last-edit run-through for another member’s book, her third. And as with mine, although we’ve been through her chapters at least twice before, this final time we still find points to clarify.
In this final go-round, the crit process is different. Now we’re into the polishing stage. Of course, only the author can do that final polish, but crit partners who know each other’s voice can be of immeasurable help. Tuesday afternoon, we discussed a particular word in my friend’s manuscript. Would another better represent the message she wanted to convey? Would still a third work to alter the rhythm (cadence) of a sentence to better transmit the feeling she intended?
Silly? We don’t think so. As Mark Twain said, “The difference between the right word and the almost right word is the difference between lightning and a lightning bug.” We may not always get it right, but it’s not for lack of trying. Working together (brainstorming, checking a word’s origin, analyzing whether the particular character would have “said that”), we found a phrase that she thought better reflected the character, the time, and the situation.
Only other writers understand the drive to get the wording exactly right. And it’s easier when you have someone to bounce ideas off of. Now, critique groups don’t sit around all day debating esoteric word choices. J They offer advice and insight on whatever the individual writer needs. Characterization? Plot and story arc? GMC? All those and many other things.
That’s why I firmly believe in the importance of critique groups or partners. Not every writer thinks they’re important, and that’s fine. Whatever works for the individual. But I highly recommend them. They’re especially helpful for someone who’s starting on a writing career.
 A partner or a group also can help answer basic grammar, structure and development questions. You know, the kinds of things we all need to master so our stories can be understood.
True, finding the right critique partners or group isn’t always easy. Not every group is one in which you’ll remain. But when you find the right combination, it’s unbelievably helpful.
Right now, I’m lucky enough to have found two wonderful groups.
My particular weekly crit group has been together for years. We’ve become friends, but the friendship doesn’t interfere with the sometimes painfully honest evaluations we give each other’s work. We’re all published—all but one, who could be if she’d only submit!
The second is an online critique coterie of historical authors whose expertise is fantastic. They provide great insight, total honesty, and unequivocal support.
So if you don’t have a critique group or at least a critique partner, you might consider looking for one that’s a good fit for you. It might take a bit of searching, but I firmly believe it will be worth it.
Good luck and happy writing!
#WWW The Joy & Agony of Cover Art - Katherine Grey #WritersLife
I'm thrilled to have romance author, Katherine Grey, sharing today about the joy & agony she experienced during her cover art experience.
For me, it hit REAL close to home ...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

As a reader I often wondered why an author would choose a cover that either had little to do with the content of the book or depicted the main characters in a way that didn’t match the descriptions within the story itself. One of the first things I learned after receiving my first contract is that in most cases authors have little control over the covers of their books. Of course, self-publishing is a different matter as the author is able to control every aspect including the cover art.

When I tell my reading friends and family members this little known fact, they’re surprised by how little control the author has. I’m not saying this is true of every publisher, just that it seems the norm.

In the instance of my publisher, the author is sent a fact sheet to complete regarding the basics of the story to help the cover artist design the cover.  Questions include what the hero and heroine look like – eye color, hair color etc., the time period of the story, where it takes place, how the characters would dress and so forth. Completing the form doesn’t always work out the way one expects.

For my latest release, An Unexpected Gift, I received a beautiful cover showing the ocean with a tall masted ship off to the side, a compass and an embracing dark haired couple.  It was beautiful and I would have been thrilled to have it as my cover except… there is not a single sentence in the book about sailing or ships and my heroine had blonde hair which was mentioned at various times throughout the book. I contacted my editor who contacted someone who contacted someone and I received an email back stating they would re-do the cover deleting the ship and anything sailing related. Since they were already revising the cover, I asked if the heroine could be depicted as a blonde. The answer came back that no changes would be made to the couple. Luckily, I was just finishing up final edits so I went back through the entire manuscript and changed anything mentioning the heroine’s hair color from blonde to brown to match the woman on the cover. The revised cover is what you see today. It’s still a great cover, but what if it had been too late to change the heroine’s hair color? Not a big deal, you say. I know authors who’ve gotten scathing reviews because the male and/or female on the cover of the book doesn’t match the description of the character within the book.

I have a friend who writes lovely contemporary romance novels where the love scenes end at the bedroom door. When it came time to give her publisher some ideas of what she would like for a cover, she had only one request – no clinch covers. (A clinch cover is where the hero and heroine are depicted in some sort of embrace and sometimes in a state of undress.) She received a cover of a very good looking couple in an embrace and neither the male or female had a shirt on. To say she was horrified is an understatement. Not because the couple was undressed, but because she was worried that the cover depicted a level of steaminess that the reader would not find within the story.

And of course we’ve all heard about Christina Dodd’s infamous cover of her novel, Castles In The Air, that depicts a heroine with 3 arms. Now I’m sure the cover artist didn’t decide a 3 armed heroine just had to be on that cover. It was a mistake that didn’t get caught in the proofing round, but it’s a fun example of one of the strange things an author might see when she opens that email announcing the cover of her next book.
What I’ve learned through the whole process of publication is that some things we have little or no control over once we sign that contract and cover art is one of them. When dealing with cover art, I’ve learned to hope for the best and prepare for the worst and always to be surprised. Thankfully, most of the surprises have been good.

An Unexpected Gift

Known only as Lazarus to the band of cutthroats and thieves he leads, William Prescott will do anything to find his missing sister, even blackmail a fragile young woman into helping him. But he never plans to fall in love with this mysterious woman with a troubled past.

Haunted by the memories of war, Olivia St. Germaine wants nothing more than to live a normal life. But when her brother, a doctor, suddenly leaves town without a word, she is forced to use her medical knowledge to help an injured man who puts her life in danger. Can she keep herself safe as she tends Lazarus, or is her heart more vulnerable than she realizes?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt:
Removing her hat, she crossed to the dressing table and pulled the
pins from her hair, letting it tumble down around her
shoulders. She massaged her scalp, then ran her fingers
through the thick strands.
 “Watching you do that could give a bloke ideas.”
 Olivia whirled around, her hand pressed against her
chest. Her heart stuttered for a moment, then began
racing like that of a runaway horse. She reached behind
her and grabbed her hairbrush. As a weapon, it was the
best she could do. She scanned the shadows for the
intruder.
 Lazarus lounged in her favorite reading spot, his
feet crossed at the ankles while he rested his elbows on
the arms of the chair. Situated as it was near the
window, his dark clothing blended in with the shadows
among deep blue drapery. He watched her over his
linked fingers.
 “Aren’t you going to ask why I’m here?”
 She didn’t answer; the warning she’d received
earlier replayed itself in her mind. Fear ran its fingertip
down her spine.
 “Shall I tell you then?” He stood with slow careful
movements, then advanced on her until there was no
more than a hair’s breadth between them.
 She took a step back and banged into the dressing
table, setting the small collection of bottles jangling.
 “Afraid?”
 Olivia shook her head. “Of course not.”
 “You should be.”
When Katherine started talking to her friends about the characters in her head as though they were real people, she decided it was time to start putting all those people populating her mind along with their exploits down on paper.  A chance meeting with another writer led her to seriously pursue a writing career. Her debut novel, Impetuous, was released by The Wild Rose Press in August 2011. Friends have gotten used to Katherine’s imaginary friends but still often ask, “Wait, is this a real person?” whenever she mentions someone they don’t know.
She lives in upstate NY with her family, but threatens to move South at the beginning of every winter season.
Crossroads
A Demos City Novel
Release Date: November 4, 2013
Target Reader: Adult
Keywords: Thriller/Suspense, Werewolf
Werewolf. Bar bouncer. Dad. Standard traits for any self-respecting, reformed criminal, living under the radar in Demos City. For Leon Gray, normal is what he wants—for himself and his not-yet-changed teenage daughter.
Playing bodyguard to crusading reporter David Hastings would totally ruin Leon’s peace, especially since Hastings has hired killers on his trail, pros who know how he takes his espresso in the morning, and where Leon lives.
The payoff, though, would fill up Shauna’s empty college fund, and in a battle between opportunity and ordinary, money wins. He just has to keep Hastings alive long enough to cash the check.
If only he didn’t have to save his daughter, too.
As a budding wolf, she’s piqued the interest of a local pack Alpha—one Leon knows will steal Shauna right out from under him the first chance he gets.
Leon isn’t about to give up on his daughter or Hastings, and will fight for both longer than it took Demos City to see werewolves as equals to humans.
He can only hope it doesn’t take a thousand years.
Eye of the Soul
Pool of Souls #1
by ME!
Fantasy
Escape.
That should be Hyla’s first thought as her people are chained and imprisoned for no imaginable reason.
Instead, Hyla finds herself traveling through a land void of Natives, with human soldiers pillaging in desperate pursuit of her, and in search of the mystical Pool of Souls—home to the one man who can save her people.
Or so she believes.
Led by her faith in the deity Fadir, Hyla is met along her journey by Jadon—a human male and fierce King’s warrior, and his childhood best friend Conlin—one of the few Natives aware of his Fadir-given Talents.
Protected by Jadon, guided by Conlin, and with an unfailing belief in the purpose of her pilgrimage, Hyla carries on.
Like her, though, another searches for the Pool, and should he gain access first, everyone she loves, and everything she knows, could be lost.
Forever.
Believe in Instant Gratification? #SonsofWrath Blog Tour #PNR #Giveaway
Super pumped to host Ms. Keri Lake today for part of her Soul Resurrected blog tour!!! If you haven't checked out this series yet, YOU ARE MISSING SOME GOOD READS!!!
But enough of me & my thoughts. Let's check in with Ms. Lake herself as she tells us what she thinks about instant gratification.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I don’t believe in instant gratification.

Call me crazy, but in all aspects of life, I’ve come to expect that you have to work and be patient for the rewards.

I went to college, endured sleepless nights and stressed over exams, so that I could land a dream job once I had that degree in hand.  I suffered hours of labor, pain, screaming, more pain, for the precious moments that followed, basking in the joys of motherhood.   Hubs and I have gone through enough Christmas Eves, reading nonsensical directions for things like, how to put a stinkin’ dollhouse together—cursing, scratching our heads and panicking when we realized we still had other gifts to wrap—all for those mornings when the little ones would wake, eyes all alight with excitement.

The same goes for writing.

My books tend to be about 500+ pages in length.  The stories are multi-pov and I pack a lot of detail in those first few chapters that I suspect, probably leaves the reader wondering, what does all this mean

They are pieces of the puzzle.  I do my best to avoid gratuitous writing, so you can be assured, even the subtle pieces somehow contribute to the story overall—seemingly insignificant yet compelling little curiosities that drive you into the dark places you’d otherwise prefer to avoid.

My goal, in any book I write, is to make the payoff worth the journey.  Since I’m a cruel and evil mistress, the journey is often riddled with a whole lot of hopelessness and despair because there’s some twisted enjoyment I get out of putting my characters through hell, taking them to the black moment and letting them stew there for a while.

The most gratifying sensation, as a reader, comes when I’m feeling like there is NO WAY these characters are going to figure out this mess—we’re going to be stuck in this unfixable state, with no hope for resolution.  Emotions are swelling, tension is mounting, my nails are bitten to hell and my stomach is in knots, until … somehow they do it.  By some unexpected miracle—and I don’t mean the deus ex machina variety—the characters find a way.  And here I sit, with an enormous smile on my face because I just didn’t see that coming!  Even though I know there’s an HEA or HFN on the horizon, I have an odd addiction to those stressful moments when I’m convinced the author went outside of the genre for this one.

This is how I write my stories.

They’re not perfect.  I can’t guarantee that you won’t want to throw your Kindle at the wall at some point.  You’ll hate my characters, at times, and want to scoop them up and coddle them at others.  The story will have you feeling like you just want to find out what all of it means and how the heck it’s linked to the main characters.  Like right now.

And all I can say to that is:

Keep reading.

Because if I gave you all the answers in the beginning, you’d never appreciate what it took to get there.  The pain, the stress, the moments of despair—all of which makes for a more satisfying end to the journey, and completely justifies why a character would be so willing to do whatever my deranged mind puts him through, for something as crazy as love.
